This bill establishes a new crime in Alaska called "wearing a mask in public while acting as a peace officer," making it illegal for a peace officer to knowingly conceal their face with a mask or disguise while interacting with the public in their official capacity. However, this prohibition does not apply to peace officers on undercover assignments or those wearing protective gear like face shields that don't obscure their face, medical masks or respirators if medically necessary and documented by a physician, or masks for protection against smoke exposure. Violating this new law would be considered a class B misdemeanor, a less serious criminal offense. The bill also specifies that this new law applies to offenses committed on or after its effective date, which is immediately upon passage.
