This bill allows the City of Cumberland to use speed monitoring systems, which are devices that record vehicles exceeding the speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour, specifically on Interstate 68 where the posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour, but only for tractor-trailer combinations. Any fines collected from these violations, after covering the costs of implementing and administering the systems, will be used by the city to fund public safety programs, transportation improvements, and maintenance within the Interstate 68 corridor in Cumberland. The bill also clarifies that these speed monitoring systems can only be used to enforce speed limits for Class F (tractor) vehicles combined with Class G (trailer) freight trailers or semitrailers, and that a vehicle not meeting this description is a valid defense against a citation. This legislation is set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
