This bill, known as the Maryland Fallen Heroes Tuition Benefits Act, exempts financially dependent children of state or local public safety employees who die in the line of duty from paying out-of-state or out-of-county tuition at Maryland's public colleges and universities, regardless of where the child resides. A "state or local public safety employee" is defined to include career or volunteer firefighters, ambulance or rescue squad members, law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and members of the Maryland National Guard who were state residents at the time of their death. The bill also mandates that the relevant commission will create regulations to put this exemption into practice, and it is set to become effective on July 1, 2026.
