This bill allows the Maryland Department of Education to create a system for noting veteran status on educator licenses and public profiles. If this system is established, applicants for an educator license can provide proof of their veteran status, such as a certification from the Department of Veterans and Military Families, a DD Form 214 (a military separation document), or other acceptable documentation. They can also choose to have this veteran status noted on their license or public profile and agree to be contacted by state agencies about potential veteran benefits. If an applicant provides the necessary documentation and consent, the Department will add the veteran notation and, upon request from an executive branch agency, electronically share relevant applicant information, following applicable laws. The Department is also authorized to create regulations to implement these changes, and the bill is set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
