This bill directs the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), in collaboration with other state agencies like the Department of Health and the Department of Social Services, to develop a plan for integrating certified community health workers into Medicaid managed care and other health and human services programs. Community health workers are individuals who help people navigate the healthcare system and access social services. The DMAS will assess how to pay for these services through Medicaid, consider requiring managed care organizations to employ them, create training programs accessible to those receiving public assistance like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), and explore how these workers can improve program accuracy and help high-need Medicaid populations. The DMAS is required to consult with various stakeholders, including the Virginia Community Health Worker Association and managed care organizations, and will report its findings and recommendations to legislative committees by December 1, 2026.
