This bill, known as the "In the Child's Best Interest Act," establishes new rules for adoptive, fostering, and legal guardianship arrangements in Oklahoma, aiming to ensure the well-being of children. The act mandates that official adoptive, fostering, or legal guardianship arrangements can only involve one adult or two adults who are one adult female and one adult male, with these arrangements limited to a maximum of two individuals. While these official roles are restricted, other adults, such as grandparents or friends, are permitted to assist in a child's care. If any arrangement is found to violate these provisions, courts will declare it void, and the Department of Human Services or another agency will find a new home for the child, prioritizing biologically related adults who are proven to be safe and suitable. This act will take effect on November 1, 2026.
