This bill directs the Board of Medicine, a state agency that oversees medical professionals, to create a patient decision checklist for individuals considering breast implant procedures. This checklist, which will be available in both electronic and physical formats, is intended to educate patients about the potential risks associated with breast implants, including specific complications like breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (a rare type of cancer) and an increased chance of developing certain autoimmune and connective tissue diseases. It will also inform patients about alternatives, such as aesthetic flat closure, and other systemic symptoms that can arise from breast implants. The Board is required to form a work group, including various medical professionals like plastic surgeons, oncologists, and nurse practitioners, to develop these materials and distribute them to licensed medical providers by January 1, 2027.
