This bill amends existing Alabama law to clarify and expand the rights of media organizations to broadcast public K-12 school sporting events. It defines "broadcast" to include video, audio, or photographs transmitted through various mediums like television, radio, computers, or internet-enabled devices, and "cover" as observing for reporting and broadcasting. The bill states that no entity can interfere with media organizations' ability to cover or broadcast regular season and post-season sporting events, including playoffs and championships, involving K-12 schools. However, it also grants each individual school the exclusive authority to decide which media organization(s) can cover or broadcast these events and to negotiate broadcast contracts. This act is set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
