This bill expands the authority of circuit and district courts to order custody evaluations, which are assessments conducted to help judges make decisions about child custody and visitation arrangements. Previously, only juvenile and domestic relations district courts could order these evaluations. The bill clarifies that circuit and district courts can now order a custody evaluation or an independent mental health or psychological evaluation to aid in determining the best interests of a child in custody or visitation cases, and the court can decide how the costs of these evaluations will be paid by the parties involved.
