Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Article 2 of Chapter 5 of Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to issuance, expiration, and renewal of licenses, so as to provide for the placement of a notation of a nonapparent physical or mental disability upon a driver's license; to provide for the removal of such notation upon request; to prohibit the disclosure of information relating to the request for such notation; to provide for a short title; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill, known as "Eric's Law," amends existing Georgia law regarding driver's licenses to allow individuals with physical or mental disabilities that are not immediately obvious to request a special symbol be placed on their license to indicate this condition. To do this, applicants must provide a sworn statement describing their disability. The law also clarifies that individuals can request the removal of this notation, and the Department of Driver Services is prohibited from disclosing any information about these requests unless authorized by the individual or by a court order. This expands upon a previous provision that allowed veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder to request a similar notation.
