Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Chapter 24 of Title 33 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to insurance generally, so as to require health benefit plans, policies, or contracts executed by the state to cover medically necessary orthotic devices and prosthetic devices and their materials and components; to revise a definition; to provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill requires health benefit plans, policies, or contracts that provide major medical benefits and are executed by the state for state employees, public school teachers and employees, and members and employees of the Board of Regents (including their retirees and dependents) to cover medically necessary orthotic devices (devices that support or align the body) and prosthetic devices (artificial body parts), along with their materials and components, starting January 1, 2027. The bill amends existing law to clarify that the definition of "health benefit policy" now explicitly includes these state-executed plans for coverage of these devices, while still excluding self-funded health insurance plans governed by the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).
