This bill requires health benefit plans, policies, or contracts that provide major medical benefits and are executed by the state for state employees, public school teachers and employees, and members and employees of the Board of Regents (including their retirees and dependents) to cover medically necessary orthotic devices (devices that support or align the body) and prosthetic devices (artificial body parts), along with their materials and components, starting January 1, 2027. The bill amends existing law to clarify that the definition of "health benefit policy" now explicitly includes these state-executed plans for coverage of these devices, while still excluding self-funded health insurance plans governed by the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).
