The instruction will provide students in grades 9 through 12 with: information concerning the correlation between distracted driving and erratic driving behavior, such as lane-weaving and sudden speed changes, and driving accidents; and statistics concerning the number of driving accidents, injuries and fatalities resulting form cell phone usage and text messaging while driving. Under the bill, the Commissioner of Education will provide school districts with sample learning activities and resources designed to promote awareness of the dangers associated with cell phone usage and text messaging while driving.

AI Summary

This bill mandates that New Jersey school districts, starting with the 2021-2022 school year, must include lessons on the dangers of using cell phones and texting while driving within their health education curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12, as part of the state's established learning standards for comprehensive health and physical education. These lessons will educate students about how distracted driving, which includes behaviors like swerving or abrupt speed changes, is linked to accidents, and will also present data on the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths caused by cell phone use while driving. To assist schools, the Commissioner of Education will supply sample educational materials and activities to help raise awareness about these risks.
