Bill Summary
This bill increases automobile liability insurance coverage amounts for persons convicted of driving under the influence. Under the bill, a person convicted of driving under the influence, as a first offense, will be required to maintain automobile liability insurance coverage, in which coverage must, for one year, be at least in: (a) an amount or limit of $250,000, exclusive of interest and costs, on account of injury to, or death of, one person, in any one accident; (b) an amount or limit of $500,000, exclusive of interest and costs, on account of injury to or death of, more than one person, in any one accident; and (c) an amount or limit of $100,000, exclusive of interest and costs, for damage to property in any one accident. Additionally, a person convicted of driving under the influence, as a second offense, will be required under the bill to maintain automobile liability insurance coverage for two years, while a person convicted of DUI as a third or subsequent offense will be required to maintain automobile liability insurance coverage for four years. The coverage will be at least in: (a) an amount or limit of $500,000, exclusive of interest and costs, on account of injury to, or death of, one person, in any one accident; (b) an amount or limit of $1,000,000, exclusive of interest and costs, on account of injury to or death of, more than one person, in any one accident; and (c) an amount or limit of $200,000, exclusive of interest and costs, for damage to property in any one accident. Lastly, the bill makes technical updates to certain provisions.
