Bill Summary

This bill makes it a crime of the fourth degree for a person with purpose to expose another to harassment or risk of harm to life or property, or in reckless disregard of the probability of such exposure, to knowingly post or publish on the Internet the home address or unpublished telephone number of any judge, prosecutor, or court administrative personnel. A fourth degree crime is punishable by a prison term of up to 18 months, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. This bill is modeled in part after N.J.S.A. 2C:20-31.1 which makes it a similar crime with respect to law enforcement officers.

AI Summary

This bill makes it a fourth-degree crime, punishable by up to 18 months in prison and/or a $10,000 fine, for anyone to knowingly post or publish on the internet the home address or unpublished home telephone number of a judge, prosecutor, or court administrative personnel, if they do so with the intent to expose that person to harassment or risk of harm to their life or property, or if they act with reckless disregard for the likelihood of such exposure. A "judge" is defined to include various judicial roles, a "prosecutor" refers to county prosecutors and their assistants, and "court administrative personnel" includes the Administrative Director of the Courts and other designated employees of the Administrative Office of the Courts. This legislation is similar to an existing law that protects law enforcement officers from having their personal information published online under similar circumstances.
