This medical necessity determination must be made by the covered person's pediatrician or another medical doctor, and importantly, this coverage must be provided without requiring prior authorization or other utilization management requirements, meaning insurers cannot add extra steps or hurdles to accessing this benefit. The bill applies to contracts and policies that are issued, renewed, or approved in New Jersey on or after its effective date, which is 90 days after enactment, and it also extends to contracts purchased by the State Health Benefits Commission and the School Employees' Health Benefits Commission.
