Bill Summary

This bill requires the Commissioner of Transportation, in consultation with the Division of Parks and Forestry in the Department of Environmental Protection, the Historic Sites Council in the Department of Environmental Protection, the New Jersey Historic Trust in the Department of Community Affairs, and the Division of Travel and Tourism in the Department of State, to develop a common design for roadway signs that indicate a historic site or historic district, which is to include, but not be limited to, an identifiable historic symbol to indicate a historic time period, event, or war that relates to the historic site or historic district. The signs are to be designed, fabricated, located, and installed in accordance with the standards and guidance of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways issued by the Federal Highway Administration. The bill further provides that whenever a State entity replaces an existing roadway sign that indicates a historic district or historic site, the new sign must conform to the common design, fabrication, and location elements required by the bill.

AI Summary

This bill mandates that the Commissioner of Transportation, in collaboration with several state departments including Environmental Protection, Community Affairs, and State, must create a standardized design for road signs that identify historic districts or sites, which are defined as areas or properties of historical, cultural, or architectural importance. This common design will feature a recognizable symbol representing the historical significance of the location, such as a specific time period, event, or war. The signs will adhere to the guidelines set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, a federal standard for traffic signs. Furthermore, any state agency replacing an existing historic site or district sign after this bill becomes law must ensure the new sign conforms to this newly developed common design, fabrication, and placement.
