Upon the superintendent's recommendation, a school board can authorize these specialists to carry handguns in school buildings and on school grounds, provided they meet specific legal requirements for firearm possession. Furthermore, school principals can designate these specialists as staff members responsible for maintaining order and discipline, granting them access to information about juveniles involved in offenses. The bill also mandates the development of a specialized training program for these specialists by the Department of Education in consultation with the Attorney General, covering various aspects of school security and requiring annual refresher training in active shooter response and firearms. Finally, the bill amends existing laws to include school security specialists in the New Jersey School Safety Specialist and School Security Specialist Academy's certification program and the training course for safe schools resource officers.
