This bill requires that individuals applying for a vessel number with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, those taking approved boat safety courses, and those purchasing or renting personal watercraft receive information about different types of United States Coast Guard (USCG) approved personal flotation devices (PFDs), including when each type is required by law and when its use is recommended. The USCG is a federal agency responsible for maritime safety. Personal flotation devices are safety equipment worn to keep a person afloat in water. The bill also mandates that purchasers or renters of personal watercraft acknowledge they have received and read this information, and that sellers or renters must offer the option to purchase or rent a USCG Type I PFD, which is generally considered the most effective for offshore use. This new requirement aims to enhance boater safety by ensuring individuals are better informed about appropriate PFD usage.
