Bill Summary

This bill would allow a municipality to enter into agreements with developers to provide affordable housing occupancy preferences for low and moderate income current residents of the municipality of up to 50 percent of the affordable units in a particular project. Current law does not provide any preference for residents of a municipality for affordable housing located in the municipality. This bill would help residents of a municipality in need of affordable housing to be able to stay in their hometowns.

AI Summary

This bill allows municipalities to enter into agreements with developers to give a preference to current residents of that municipality for up to 50 percent of the affordable housing units in a new development. Affordable housing refers to housing that is priced so that households earning a certain percentage of the median income can afford it. Currently, there is no provision in the law that allows municipalities to prioritize their own residents for affordable housing built within their borders. This change aims to help individuals and families who live in a municipality, and who need affordable housing, to remain in their hometowns.
