This bill requires the Commissioner of Highways, when performing snow and ice removal in Planning District 8, to prioritize clearing "school access corridors," which are defined as sidewalks or crosswalks maintained by the Department of Highways, located on or near a main road within half a mile of a school, and frequently used by students walking to or from that school. This prioritization is intended to ensure safer routes for students, and the Department will coordinate with the "safe routes to school program coordinator," a federal program aimed at improving pedestrian and bicycle safety for students. However, this requirement does not apply if another party, such as a resident or landowner, is already legally obligated to clear snow and ice from these corridors.
