This bill amends existing West Virginia law to prevent the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), the governing body for high school sports and activities, from penalizing or discriminating against middle or high school students who also participate in travel sports teams. The WVSSAC is responsible for setting rules for interscholastic athletic events and other extracurricular activities for public, private, and parochial schools, as well as for home-schooled students and those participating in programs like the Hope Scholarship. The bill specifically adds a provision stating that the WVSSAC cannot take any "adverse action," which means any negative consequence or punishment, against these student athletes. However, it does include a condition that if there's a scheduling conflict between a student's school sports program and their travel sports team, the student must prioritize their school program.
