This bill authorizes the city of Cranston to create a specialized housing division within its municipal court, which will handle cases involving violations of various housing-related ordinances and state building codes, including zoning, minimum housing standards, and the state building code. This new division will have the power to impose jail sentences and fines, administer oaths, compel witness attendance, and punish for contempt, similar to the existing municipal court. Furthermore, the housing division can take equitable actions such as ordering repairs, vacation, or demolition of violating dwellings, compelling compliance with laws, and placing properties into receivership. Appeals from the housing division's decisions will be heard in the superior court with a new trial. The bill also allows for the appointment of a judge and clerk specifically for this housing division, who may or may not be the same individuals serving the main municipal court. This act will become effective immediately upon its passage.
