This bill expands paid military leave benefits for certain public employees in Virginia, specifically law-enforcement officers. Previously, most Commonwealth or political subdivision employees were entitled to up to 21 workdays of paid leave for federally funded military duty, including training, or when called by the Governor. However, this bill amends the law to grant law-enforcement officers, as defined in § 9.1-101, paid leaves of absence for all required work hours during federally funded military duty or when called by the Governor, with a maximum of 388 work hours per federal fiscal year. This provision also applies to professional firefighters, who were already covered by similar extended leave provisions. The bill ensures these officers do not lose seniority, accrued leave, or their efficiency rating during these leaves and are restored to their positions upon return.
