This bill, titled the West Virginia Homeschool Student Athletics Participation Act, allows homeschooled students who are part of organized homeschool athletic teams to compete in regular-season interscholastic athletic contests against schools that are members of the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC), the state's governing body for high school sports. To participate, homeschool organizations must have health, safety, and eligibility guidelines similar to WVSSAC member schools, agree to follow WVSSAC rules for game conduct, officiating, and scheduling, and provide proof of comparable insurance coverage. Crucially, these homeschool teams will not be included in any official WVSSAC rankings, standings, or statistical records, nor will they be eligible for WVSSAC postseason competitions like sectionals, regionals, or state championships, ensuring that their participation does not affect the official records or outcomes for WVSSAC member schools. Individual WVSSAC member schools can choose whether or not to schedule games against homeschool teams without penalty. The WVSSAC will oversee the implementation of this act, ensuring homeschool organizations meet eligibility criteria and handling any disputes that may arise.
