This bill, known as the "Prohibiting Corruption in the Legislature Act of 2026," aims to prevent conflicts of interest by prohibiting any member of the Legislature from serving as a member, vice chair, or chair of a legislative committee if they have a family member within the third degree of consanguinity (meaning a close relative like a parent, sibling, child, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, or first cousin) who is employed by, appointed to, or contracted by the state or any of its political subdivisions, and that entity has any oversight, including financial or legislative, over the family member's position. A knowing violation of this rule is considered corruption and can lead to the removal of the legislator from office, with the act taking effect on November 1, 2026.
