Bill Summary

This bill requires the Department of Public Instruction, in consultation with the Office of School Safety in the Department of Justice, to create a prerecorded audio message to announce a school lockdown. Additionally, DPI must make the audio message available to public, private, and tribal schools at no cost. Under current law, school boards and governing bodies of private schools must have a school safety plan that includes an individualized safety plan for each school building and facility that is regularly occupied by pupils. The bill requires that each individualized safety plan incorporate the school lockdown audio message created by DPI to announce a school lockdown required in the plan. For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as an appendix to this bill.

AI Summary

This bill requires the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), working with the Office of School Safety within the Department of Justice, to develop a pre-recorded audio message that can be used to announce a school lockdown, and this message will be provided to all public, private, and tribal schools for free. Currently, schools are already mandated to have safety plans that include specific safety measures for each building, and this bill amends that requirement by stipulating that if a school's safety plan includes a lockdown procedure, it must now incorporate the DPI-created audio message to announce any such lockdown.
