This bill prohibits the manufacture, sale, offering for sale, or distribution of "cultivated meat," which is defined as meat or a meat product produced from animal cells grown in a laboratory setting outside of an animal. Violators of this prohibition will be guilty of a misdemeanor, and businesses selling such products may have their licenses suspended or revoked by the State Department of Health, which is also granted authority to create rules to enforce this new law. The bill also makes an amendment to existing law regarding false advertising of food, specifically modifying definitions related to "manufactured-protein food products" and "qualifying terms" to ensure that products resembling meat but not derived from traditional animal slaughter are clearly distinguished from actual meat products, and it clarifies that this prohibition does not apply to research conducted by governmental entities or educational institutions. This act is set to become effective on November 1, 2026.
