This bill increases the penalties for intentionally obstructing or interfering with the normal use of public streets, highways, or sidewalks, making such actions a felony instead of a misdemeanor. Previously, penalties for these offenses included fines up to $400 or jail time of up to four months, or both. Under this bill, individuals convicted of obstructing public ways will face a fine of at least $1,500 and imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections for one to two years, or both. The bill also clarifies that these provisions are in addition to any other existing state laws and will take effect on July 1, 2026.
