This bill amends existing law to clarify which individuals school districts can charge for meals provided through their food services programs. Specifically, it allows school districts to charge students who are not eligible for free or reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program, as well as school employees and other individuals not otherwise exempted. Importantly, the bill adds a new provision stating that school districts cannot charge students who are eligible for reduced-price meals for any meals served under these federal programs. Furthermore, it establishes a process for the Department of Education to reimburse school districts for the cost of meals served to students who are eligible for free meals, by calculating the difference between the reimbursement for free meals and reduced-price meals and multiplying that by the number of meals served to students who cannot be charged. This reimbursement is to be funded by money appropriated in the general appropriation bill.
