Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend and reenact R.S. 40:1665.2(F), to provide for survival

AI Summary

This bill extends survivor benefits to the surviving spouse or child of a reserve or auxiliary law enforcement officer who dies in the line of duty, in addition to currently covered commissioned law enforcement officers. The existing law, R.S. 40:1665.2(F), provides financial security for surviving spouses and children of law enforcement officers in certain circumstances, and this amendment ensures that reserve officers are also covered if their death occurs while traveling to or from a public safety emergency, responding to a request for law enforcement assistance concerning public health, safety, or welfare, or traveling to or from their residence and work area in a law enforcement vehicle provided by their agency. The Council on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) is a body that certifies law enforcement officers, and this bill clarifies that certification by POST is not a prerequisite for reserve officers to receive these benefits.
