This bill amends Mississippi law to allow first responders, defined as law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical services providers, emergency management personnel, and public safety telecommunicators, who become members of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) on or after March 1, 2026, to receive their retirement allowance after 25 years of service, regardless of their age. It also establishes a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for these first responders, tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), to help their retirement benefits keep pace with inflation. The bill makes these changes by modifying various sections of the Mississippi Code related to retirement system definitions, creditable service, retirement allowance calculations, additional benefits, death and disability benefits, retirement options, refunds, and the administration of retirement accounts.
