This bill, titled the "First Responders Retirement Incentive," amends existing law to provide a retirement benefit for certain law enforcement officers and firefighters in Mississippi. Specifically, it allows individuals who became members of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) on or after July 1, 2011, and have at least four years of service credit within PERS, to receive one additional year of "creditable service" for every five years they have served as a first responder in Mississippi. Creditable service refers to the years of employment that count towards a member's retirement benefits. This additional service credit will be provided at no cost to the member. However, to utilize this incentive for retirement eligibility, the member must be in good standing and have no felony convictions at the time of retirement. The bill also specifies an effective date of July 1, 2026.
