This curriculum will cover AI definitions, key concepts like machine learning and generative AI, best practices for AI use, ethical considerations, ongoing AI innovations, and how AI relates to Hawaii's history, environment, and culture, all while incorporating the school's specific AI policy. Teachers will need to complete professional development and be certified to teach these courses, with the board potentially collaborating with a newly established Advisory Council for Artificial Intelligence Education, which will also help develop teacher certification programs and curate resources. Additionally, a three-year pilot program will offer grants to public schools to support teacher training and the development of supplementary AI literacy curriculum materials, with a focus on culturally responsive lesson plans. The bill also requires reports to the Legislature on the pilot program and appropriates $5,000,000 for its implementation. For the purposes of this bill, "artificial intelligence" is defined as it is in federal law (15 United States Code section 9401(3)).
