This bill creates a new offense for recklessly discharging a firearm into the air, ground, a body of water, or an object near the person if the discharge occurs at a public gathering or event with at least 25 people present, classifying this as a Class A misdemeanor, which is a serious but less severe criminal offense. The bill also specifies several exceptions where this new offense would not apply, including when law enforcement officers, military personnel, or certain animal control officers are discharging firearms in the line of duty, when lawfully hunting or controlling nuisance wildlife with permits, at designated sport shooting ranges, or in defense of oneself, another person, or a domestic animal against an animal attack. Additionally, the bill amends an existing law to include this new firearm discharge offense among those that are prohibited.
