This bill modifies existing Maryland law regarding open movie captioning in movie theaters, which is a transcript or dialogue of a movie displayed on the screen that cannot be turned off by the viewer. Previously, movie theaters with eight or more screens were required to provide open movie captioning for at least two screenings per week for each movie shown during the first three weeks after its premiere. This bill reduces that requirement, stating that movie theaters with four or more screens will now be subject to this requirement, and after the initial three-week period, they may provide open movie captioning with reasonable notice. The bill also specifies that this requirement does not apply to movies shown fewer than five times in a given week.
