This bill amends existing Virginia law regarding the mandatory use of safety belt systems in motor vehicles to create an exemption for emergency medical services personnel. Specifically, it allows emergency medical services personnel, as defined by state law, to be exempt from wearing safety belts while they are in the patient compartment of an emergency medical services vehicle and actively providing necessary patient care, such as administering CPR, artificial ventilation, medication, or treating and reassessing patients, where wearing the safety belt would be impractical. However, the bill clarifies that these personnel must still use safety belts when the vehicle is in motion and they are not actively providing such care, for seats that are subject to the safety belt requirements.
