Bill Summary
Assessment of costs for construction, renovation, or maintenance of courthouse, jail, or court-related facilities. Increases from two to 10 dollars the maximum sum a county or city may assess as part of the costs for any civil action filed in the district or circuit courts within its boundary, or for each criminal or traffic case in its district or circuit court in which the defendant is charged with a violation of any statute or ordinance. Such assessment shall be used for the construction, renovation, or maintenance of courthouse, jail, or court-related facilities, or to defray cooling, heating, electricity, and ordinary maintenance costs.
AI Summary
This bill proposes to increase the maximum amount that a county or city can charge as a fee in civil, criminal, and traffic cases filed in its district or circuit courts. Currently, this fee is capped at two dollars per case, but this bill would raise that cap to ten dollars. This assessment, which is collected by the court clerk and remitted to the local treasurer, is intended to fund the construction, renovation, or maintenance of courthouses, jails, and other court-related facilities, as well as to help cover increased costs for heating, cooling, electricity, and general upkeep. The bill also clarifies that these assessments are in addition to any other legal fees and are mandatory in felony, misdemeanor, and traffic infraction cases.
