This bill expands the digital mapping of unimproved public roads in West Virginia by authorizing the West Virginia Department of Tourism and county commissions to submit requests for mapping to the Commissioner of Highways. These requests must specify the intended use of the roads for outdoor recreation, their surface type (e.g., gravel, dirt), their scenic, historic, or recreational value, and their location. The Commissioner will then create digital maps of these roads, indicating whether they are unpaved and unimproved, unpaved and improved, or paved, and what types of vehicles can use them, including full-size vehicles and off-highway vehicles like all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). These digital maps will be made available online to the public in a downloadable format, providing information relevant to outdoor recreation and tourism, and the Department of Tourism and the Division of Highways will collaborate to promote these opportunities.
