This bill, titled the "State Buildings National Motto Display Act," mandates that the official United States motto, "In God We Trust," be displayed in state office buildings in West Virginia. A "state office building" is defined as any building owned or controlled by the state used for official business, and an "agency office" refers to a specific space within such a building occupied by a state entity. The motto must be displayed conspicuously and visibly to the public in each state office building and within each agency office, with each agency office being responsible for its own compliance. The displays must be durable, at least 8.5 by 11 inches, and may include a depiction of the U.S. flag, but no other language or imagery is allowed. Importantly, no state funds are to be used for these displays, though private donations may be accepted. The Department of Administration can provide nonbinding guidance, and the law is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
