This bill expands eligibility for Virginia's Electric Vehicle Grant Fund and Program, which provides funding to help transition from diesel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives that reduce air emissions. Previously, grants were primarily for public school divisions to replace diesel school buses and for other entities to replace commercial vehicles or heavy equipment. Now, the program can also award funds to any public, private, or nonprofit entity that is currently under contract with, or expects to be under contract with, a public school division, allowing them to receive grants for costs associated with replacing diesel school buses and other emissions-reducing equipment. Additionally, this bill removes a restriction that previously prevented any funds from being allocated to the program unless federal or non-state funds were available to cover the entire cost of the allocation, thereby making state funds more accessible for these initiatives.
