This bill amends existing law regarding where a forgery case can be prosecuted, also known as venue. Currently, venue for any type of forgery can be established in several locations, including where the forgery occurred, where it was used or passed, where it was found, or where a financial loss was sustained. This bill proposes to limit the venue provisions to only apply to specific types of forgery: forging public records, forging coin or bank notes, and forging or using other writings. The bill clarifies that these venue rules will apply to violations of specific sections of the law related to forgery, namely § 18.2-168, 18.2-170, or 18.2-172, which deal with counterfeiting, forgery of public records, and other forgery offenses.
