AI Summary

This bill, known as the Wastewater Treatment System Infrastructure Sustainability Act, establishes an accountability process for community public wastewater systems in Mississippi, which are defined as systems serving at least fifteen service connections or twenty-five consumers year-round. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), referred to as the "Department," will create and manage a statewide framework to assess these systems, assigning them a letter grade from A to F based on criteria such as compliance with permits and water quality standards, financial sustainability, operational performance, infrastructure condition, and customer satisfaction. The Department will develop rules and regulations to implement this grading system, ensuring objective assessments, and will publish an annual report on its website detailing each system's score and grade. Community public wastewater systems will then be required to inform their customers of their assigned grade within 30 days of its publication. This act aims to promote the sustainability of wastewater infrastructure, protect citizens from environmental hazards and poor service, and create clear standards for these systems, with the first letter grades to be published by January 1, 2028.
