This bill amends Mississippi law to allow individuals who are not residents of Mississippi to become commissioned as notaries public, provided they live in another state but are within fifteen miles of the Mississippi border and have resided there for at least thirty days. Previously, applicants were required to be residents of Mississippi for at least thirty days. The bill maintains other existing requirements for notary commissions, such as being at least eighteen years old, a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident, able to read and write English, and not otherwise disqualified. A notary public is an official authorized to witness and certify the execution of documents, and a commission is the official authorization to perform these duties.
