Bill Summary

An Act To Amend Section 73-27-1, Mississippi Code Of 1972, To Revise The Definition Of Podiatric Medicine And To Authorize Treatment Of Disorders Of The Foot And Ankle And Their Governing And Related Structures; To Provide That A Podiatrist Licensed In Mississippi May Perform Conservative And Surgical Treatments After Completing Certain Approved Training Determined To Be Sufficient By The State Board Of Medical Licensure; To Provide That A Licensed Podiatrist May Perform Surgical Treatments Of The Ankle Only In An Accredited Hospital Licensed In The State; To Prohibit Treatment At Or Above The Knee By A Podiatrist; And For Related Purposes.

AI Summary

This bill expands the scope of podiatric medicine in Mississippi by revising the definition to include the treatment of disorders of the ankle and related structures, including the lower leg muscles and tendons that control foot and ankle function, and soft tissue up to the tibial tubercle. It clarifies that a licensed podiatrist can perform both conservative and surgical treatments for the foot and ankle, provided they have completed specific postgraduate training, such as a three-year residency approved by the Council of Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) or other training deemed sufficient by the State Board of Medical Licensure. However, surgical treatments of the ankle are restricted to accredited hospitals licensed in the state, with privileges determined by the hospital's medical staff. The bill explicitly prohibits podiatrists from providing treatment at or above the knee.
