Bill Summary

Family abuse protective orders; other relief. Provides that in cases of family abuse where the court orders a permanent protective order, the court may require a respondent to pay rent or mortgage on a residence to which a petition was granted possession pursuant to such protective order and may further require that a respondent maintain suitable alternative housing and utility services to a residence to which a petitioner was granted possession.

AI Summary

This bill amends existing law to allow courts to award additional monetary relief to a petitioner in family abuse cases when a permanent protective order is issued. This means that beyond the protections already offered by a protective order, such as prohibiting contact or granting exclusive use of a residence, the court can now order the abuser to provide financial assistance for things like rent or mortgage payments on the petitioner's residence, or to pay for and maintain suitable alternative housing for the petitioner and their family. The bill also clarifies that courts can require respondents to pay for and maintain necessary utility services for the petitioner's residence or alternative housing.
