This bill amends existing law regarding family abuse protective orders, which are court orders designed to protect individuals from abuse. Specifically, it allows courts, when issuing a permanent protective order in cases of family abuse, to require the person against whom the order is issued (the respondent) to help pay for or cover the rent or mortgage for a residence that the protected person (the petitioner) has been granted possession of. Additionally, the bill permits courts to mandate that the respondent maintain suitable alternative housing and utility services for the petitioner's residence.
