This bill allows local governments to prohibit certain types of electric bicycles, specifically Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles, from being ridden on bicycle paths or trails within public parks or greenways if they deem it necessary for public safety. Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles are defined as those with a motor that assists pedaling and has a top speed of 20 miles per hour. If a local government adopts such a prohibition, they can then submit a copy of their resolution or ordinance to the Tennessee Department of Safety, which will then compile and publish a list of these prohibited areas on its website for public access. Additionally, the bill raises the minimum age for operating a Class 3 electric bicycle on certain paths or trails from 14 to 16 years old. Class 3 electric bicycles are those with a motor that can propel the rider without pedaling and have a top speed of 28 miles per hour.
