This bill amends Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 68, Chapter 14, which deals with food safety, by changing the definition of a "food service establishment." Specifically, it removes certain listed nonprofit organizations, such as churches, temples, synagogues, and other religious institutions, as well as civic, fraternal, or veteran's organizations, from being considered food service establishments if their food is prepared, served, transported, or stored by volunteer personnel. This exemption applies regardless of whether the volunteers work on consecutive or nonconsecutive days, though it does not apply to the storage of unopened, commercially canned food, packaged bulk food that is not potentially hazardous, or dry goods. The purpose of this change is to clarify which organizations are subject to food safety regulations when operating with volunteers.
