This bill expands the statewide jurisdiction of the Maryland Capitol Police, a police and security force within the Department of General Services, allowing its officers to enforce criminal laws, as well as parking and motor vehicle laws across the entire state, not just within a specified distance of state-owned or leased buildings and grounds. While this expanded authority is granted, officers must notify relevant local law enforcement agencies, including county police, state police, Baltimore City police and sheriff, and other state agency police forces, as soon as reasonably practicable when exercising these statewide powers, following established regulations and procedures. The bill also clarifies that the presiding officers of the General Assembly retain final authority over the use of and access to state legislative buildings in Annapolis. This change is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
