AI Summary

This bill requires school personnel in Mississippi to notify parents or legal guardians in writing within seven days if a student publicly identifies at school with a gender or pronoun different from their sex assigned at birth, or if they use sex-segregated programs, activities, or facilities that do not align with their sex assigned at birth. This notification requirement applies to both parents in cases of joint custody, and schools are prohibited from disciplining or retaliating against staff who refuse to use a student's preferred gender or pronoun if it differs from their sex assigned at birth. However, this notification requirement does not apply to confidential discussions a student has with school counselors, administrators, teachers, or other personnel. The bill's stated intent is to foster trust between schools and parents, involve parents in their children's social-emotional and mental health decisions, promote positive relationships, and ensure timely notification to parents about their child's gender identity expression at school.
