This bill establishes a Task Force to Study Restoration of Adequate Funding to Alcorn State University, comprised of representatives from the university, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, the Joint Legislative Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review (PEER), the State Auditor, the State Treasurer, the Director of the Department of Archives and History, and three residents appointed by the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House. The task force's duties include researching historical funding data to determine if Alcorn State University has been underfunded compared to other state institutions, especially Mississippi State University, assessing the impact of any underfunding on students, faculty, and the community, and identifying ways the state can compensate Alcorn State University through additional funding. The task force must submit a report with its findings and recommendations to the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and House Speaker by December 31, 2026, and its members will serve without compensation but can be reimbursed for expenses.
